So, you’ve found a great price BUT then you realize it’s with a “no-frills” airline. Before you hit the confirm button. Keep the following hidden charges in mind.
- Meals – Are there meals included in your flight? If it’s a short flight this might be ok, but if your flight is over 8 hours, you will need to determine, what you can bring on the plane with you to satisfy your hunger. I was recently on a flight with a major airline and was pleasantly surprised to see that their prices have come down (this can also be due to the fact that most people did not feel like spending $5.00 for a personal size of Pringles…).
- Luggage allowances – Depending on your airline and where you are going, some airlines will allow you to bring one free checked in luggage and one free carry on. Some charge for everything except a personal item. Know what you’re getting yourself into!
- Seat Selection – Most specials that you will find will not allow you to select your seat until check-in. However, at least one airline that I know of requests that you select a seat and charges you for this.
- Booking costs – Look at the final costs when booking. You can be charged for this too!
- Credit card charge – Yes, there is at least one airline that charges customers for using their credit card ( they prefer bank transfers).
I like a great deal; however, I do not jump on every deal I see. I usually travel with the major airlines and know what I’m willing to sacrifice. That is not to say that if I’m travelling alone I would not take one of these cheap flights somewhere. However, I know that buying these tickets are one of those situations when Caveat emptor holds true.
Happy Travelling!
